Indulgent Italian Affogato with Amaretti & Biscotti
Ingredients
- 1 pint vanilla gelato
- 1 cup freshly brewed espresso
- 6 Amaretti cookies (about 2 ounces)
- 4 Biscotti (about 4 ounces, broken into pieces)
- 2 tablespoons coffee liqueur
Instructions
1. Prepare the Espresso:
Brew 1 cup of espresso using your preferred method. If you have a stovetop espresso maker, use it for an authentic Italian experience. Keep the espresso hot as you prepare the other elements.
2. Crush the Amaretti:
Using a rolling pin or food processor, lightly crush the Amaretti cookies until they are in coarse crumbs. Set aside.
3. Warm the Liqueur:
In a small saucepan on the stove, gently warm the coffee liqueur over low heat for about 1-2 minutes. Do not let it boil; just warm enough to enhance the flavors.
4. Assemble the Affogato:
a. Scoop 2 generous servings of vanilla gelato into a serving glass or bowl for each person.
b. Sprinkle a generous amount of Amaretti crumbs over the gelato.
c. Pour 1-2 tablespoons of the warm coffee liqueur over each serving.
5. Add Espresso:
Immediately pour 1/4 cup of the hot espresso over each gelato serving. The heat will begin to melt the gelato, blending the flavors delightfully.
6. Serve with Biscotti:
Arrange the broken biscotti pieces around the dish or alongside each serving glass. Serve immediately to enjoy the contrast of hot and cold.
