Oven-Baked Herb and Cheese Palmiers
Ingredients
- 1 sheet puff pastry, thawed
- 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
- 1/2 cup grated Gruyère cheese
- 2 tablespoons finely chopped fresh parsley
- 1 tablespoon finely chopped fresh thyme
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
- Flour, for dusting
Instructions
1. Prepare the Work Surface:
- Lightly dust your work surface with flour to prevent sticking.
2. Roll Out the Puff Pastry:
- Unroll the thawed puff pastry sheet on the floured surface.
- Use a rolling pin to gently roll it into a 12-inch square.
3. Add Cheese and Herbs:
- Evenly sprinkle the Parmesan and Gruyère cheeses over the puff pastry.
- Distribute the chopped parsley, thyme, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper evenly on top.
4. Shape the Palmiers:
- Start rolling one side of the pastry toward the center.
- Stop when you reach the halfway point.
- Roll the opposite side towards the center, meeting the first roll.
- Lightly press the rolls together.
5. Chill the Pastry:
- Wrap the rolled pastry in plastic wrap.
- Refrigerate for at least 30 minutes to firm up. This will make slicing easier and help the shapes hold.
6. Preheat the Oven:
- While the pastry chills, preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
7. Slice the Palmiers:
- Remove the pastry from the refrigerator and unwrap.
- Cut the roll into 1/2-inch slices using a sharp knife.
- You should get about 16 slices.
8. Prepare for Baking:
- Arrange the slices on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, cut side up, spacing them about 2 inches apart.
- Brush each slice lightly with the beaten egg, which will give them a golden color.
9. Bake the Palmiers:
- Bake in the preheated oven for 12-15 minutes, or until the palmiers are puffed and golden brown.
10. Cool and Serve:
- Remove from the oven and allow to cool on a wire rack for a few minutes.
- Serve warm or at room temperature.
