Delectable Vanilla Apple Breakfast Danish
Ingredients
For the Dough:
- 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
- ¼ cup sugar
- ½ teaspoon salt
- 2 ¼ teaspoons active dry yeast (1 packet)
- ¾ cup lukewarm milk
- 1 large egg, room temperature
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

- 2 medium apples, peeled, cored, and diced

- 4 ounces cream cheese, softened
- ½ cup powdered sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions
1. Prepare the Dough:
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, salt, and yeast.
- Whisk together the lukewarm milk, egg, and vanilla extract. Slowly add this mixture to the dry ingredients, stirring until a soft dough forms.
- Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 8 minutes, adding the butter gradually. Continue kneading until the dough is smooth and elastic.
- Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover it with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm spot until it doubles in size (about 1 hour).
2. Prepare the Apple Filling:
- In a saucepan, combine the diced apples, brown sugar, cinnamon, lemon juice, and water. Cook over medium heat for about 5 minutes, or until the apples are tender.
- Dissolve the cornstarch in a bit of water, and add it to the saucepan. Stir continuously until the mixture thickens. Remove from heat and let cool.
3. Assemble the Danish:
- Preheat the oven to 375°F.
- Punch down the risen dough and roll it out into a rectangle approximately 12x15 inches.
- Cut dough into larger squares and place a tablespoon of apple filling in the center of each square.
- Fold the corners towards the center, lightly pressing them together.
- Place the pastries on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, cover, and let them rise for another 20 minutes.
4. Bake:
- Bake the Danish in the preheated oven for 12-15 minutes or until they are golden brown. Remove and let them cool slightly on a wire rack.
5. Prepare the Cream Cheese Glaze:
- Beat the softened cream cheese, powdered sugar, and vanilla extract together until smooth.
- Drizzle the glaze over the cooled Danish pastries before serving.
