Spiced Maple-Glazed Apples with Vanilla and Warm Spices
Ingredients
- 4 medium apples, cored and sliced
- 2 tablespoons lemon juice
- 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 2 tablespoons vegan butter
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cardamom
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/4 cup pure maple syrup
- 1/4 cup water
Instructions
1. Prepare the Apples:
- Core and slice the apples into even wedges.
- In a large bowl, toss the apple slices with lemon juice to prevent browning. Add the apple cider vinegar to enhance flavor.
2. Melt the Butters:
- In a medium-sized skillet over medium heat, melt the unsalted butter and vegan butter together.
- Stir until both are combined and fully melted to produce a rich, buttery base.
3. Cook the Apples:
- Add the apple slices to the skillet, cooking for about 5 minutes or until they start to soften, stirring occasionally.
- Sprinkle in ground cinnamon, cardamom, and nutmeg, ensuring the spices evenly coat the apples.
4. Prepare the Maple Glaze:
- In a small bowl, mix the vanilla extract, maple syrup, and water together. This will serve as our glaze for the apples.
5. Combine and Simmer:
- Pour the glaze mixture over the spiced apples in the skillet.
- Continue to cook on medium heat, allowing the syrup to come to a gentle simmer.
- Stir occasionally, letting the glaze reduce and thicken as the apples become tender. This should take around 8-10 minutes. Adjust the seasoning with more spices if desired.
6. Serve:
- Once the apples are soft and the sauce is syrupy and aromatic, remove from heat.
- Serve warm, either as a topping for ice cream or enjoy them on their own.
