Classic Pan-Fried Flatbread
Ingredients
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 3/4 cup lukewarm water
- 1 teaspoon active dry yeast
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 1 tablespoon olive oil (for frying)
Instructions
1. Activate Yeast
In a small bowl, combine the lukewarm water and sugar. Stir well to dissolve. Sprinkle the yeast over the water and let it sit for 5 minutes until it becomes frothy.
2. Make the Dough
In a large mixing bowl, combine flour and salt. Pour the activated yeast mixture into the flour. Mix until a shaggy dough forms. Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for about 10 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic.
3. First Rise
Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm area for approximately 1 hour, or until it's doubled in size.
4. Shape the Dough
Punch down the risen dough to release the gas. Divide the dough into four equal pieces. Roll each piece into a ball and then flatten into discs about 1/4 inch thick.
5. Pan Fry the Flatbreads
Preheat a non-stick skillet over medium heat and add a tablespoon of olive oil. Once heated, place one of the dough discs in the skillet. Cook for 2-3 minutes on each side or until golden brown and puffed.
6. Repeat
Repeat the pan-frying process with the remaining dough discs, adding more oil if necessary.
7. Serve
Serve the flatbreads warm with your choice of accompaniments, such as dips, spreads, or as a side to salad or soup.
