Caramelized Onion and Herb Sauté
Ingredients
- 4 large onions, thinly sliced
- 3 tablespoons olive oil
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon fresh thyme leaves
- Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste
- 2 tablespoons fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)
Instructions
1. Prepare the Ingredients: Slice the onions thinly and set aside. Mince the garlic cloves.
2. Heat the Pan: Place a large skillet over medium heat. Add olive oil and unsalted butter to the pan, allowing the butter to melt and the mixture to heat for about 2 minutes.
3. Start Sautéing the Onions: Add the thinly sliced onions to the pan, spreading them out evenly. Stir occasionally and let cook for 20-25 minutes, until the onions become soft and start to caramelize.
4. Add Sugar and Vinegar: Sprinkle the sugar over the onions and continue to stir. This will enhance the caramelization and add subtle sweetness. Pour in the balsamic vinegar, which will deglaze the pan and add a tangy depth of flavor. Cook for an additional 5 minutes.
5. Incorporate Garlic and Herbs: Add the minced garlic and fresh thyme to the pan. Stir constantly for 2 minutes, ensuring the garlic does not burn.
6. Season and Finish: Season the mixture with salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste. Stir well to combine all the flavors. Remove the pan from heat.
7. Garnish and Serve: Transfer the caramelized onions to a serving dish and garnish with fresh chopped parsley. Serve warm as a delicious side or topping.
