Classic Banana Cream Pie Delight
Ingredients
- 1 pre-made 9-inch pie crust
- 2 cups milk
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 2/3 cup sugar
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 3 large egg yolks
- 1/4 cup cornstarch
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 3 ripe bananas, sliced
- 1 cup whipped cream
Instructions
1. Prepare the Pie Crust
Pre-bake the pie crust according to package instructions, typically at 375°F. Allow to cool completely.
2. Make the Custard Filling
- In a medium saucepan, combine the milk, sugar, and salt. Heat over medium heat until the mixture just begins to steam. Do not boil.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together egg yolks and cornstarch until smooth. Gradually add a few tablespoons of the hot milk mixture into the yolk mixture to temper, stirring constantly.
- Slowly whisk the tempered yolk mixture back into the saucepan. Continue to cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until the mixture thickens and comes to a gentle boil, approximately 5-7 minutes.
- Remove from heat and stir in the butter and vanilla extract until smooth. Allow the custard to cool slightly.
3. Assemble the Pie
- Layer the banana slices evenly across the bottom of the cooled pie crust.
- Pour the slightly cooled custard over the bananas, spreading evenly with a spatula. The custard should cover the bananas completely.
- Place plastic wrap directly onto the surface of the custard to prevent a skin from forming. Refrigerate for at least 2 hours, or until set.
4. Garnish and Serve
Remove the pie from the refrigerator. Top with whipped cream, spreading it evenly over the custard. Optionally, garnish with additional banana slices or shaved chocolate. Slice the pie and serve chilled.
