Classic Matzo Ball Soup: A Hearty Comfort Dinner
Ingredients
- 1 cup matzo meal
- 4 large eggs
- 1/4 cup chicken fat, melted
- 1/4 cup chicken broth
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
- 8 cups chicken broth (for soup)
Instructions
1. Prepare the Matzo Ball Mixture
Whisk together the eggs, melted chicken fat, and 1/4 cup chicken broth in a large bowl until well combined.
2. Combine the Dry Ingredients
In a separate bowl, mix the matzo meal, salt, and ground black pepper. Slowly incorporate this into the wet mixture, stirring gently until fully combined. The mix should be thick yet sticky.
3. Chill the Mixture
Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and refrigerate the mixture for at least 1 hour. This allows the matzo balls to firm up, making them easier to handle.
4. Form the Matzo Balls
After chilling, wet your hands slightly to prevent sticking, and scoop out portions of the mixture. Shape each portion into a 1-inch ball. You should end up with approximately 12 to 14 matzo balls.
5. Prepare the Soup Base
In a large pot, bring 8 cups of chicken broth to a gentle boil over medium heat.
6. Cook the Matzo Balls
Carefully place the matzo balls into the broth. Cover the pot, reduce the heat to low, and simmer for about 30-40 minutes. The matzo balls will expand and rise to the surface when fully cooked.
7. Serve the Soup
Once the matzo balls are cooked through, ladle them along with the broth into bowls. Taste the broth and adjust the seasoning with additional salt and pepper if necessary. Serve hot.
