Creamy Baked Milk Custard Delight
Ingredients
- 4 cups organic whole milk
- 4 large eggs
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- Freshly grated nutmeg (optional, for garnish)
Instructions
1. Preheat the Oven: Set your oven to 350°F (175°C) to allow it to preheat while you prepare the custard mixture.
2. Prepare the Baking Dish: Lightly grease a 2-quart baking dish with butter or cooking spray to prevent sticking.
3. Warm the Milk: In a medium saucepan, gently heat the organic whole milk over medium-low heat until just warm. Do not boil. This process should take about PT5M (5 minutes).
4. Beat the Eggs and Sugar: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, granulated sugar, vanilla extract, and salt until well combined and slightly frothy. This takes approximately PT3M (3 minutes).
5. Combine Milk with Egg Mixture: Gradually add the warmed milk to the egg mixture, whisking continuously to prevent the eggs from cooking. Ensure a smooth and homogenous custard base.
6. Transfer to Baking Dish: Pour the custard mixture into the prepared baking dish.
7. Create a Water Bath: Place the filled baking dish inside a larger baking pan. Carefully pour hot water into the larger pan until it reaches halfway up the sides of the custard dish. This water bath technique ensures even cooking and prevents the custard from cracking.
8. Bake the Custard: Carefully transfer the setup to the preheated oven. Bake for approximately PT45M (45 minutes), or until the custard is set around the edges but still slightly wobbly in the center.
9. Cool and Garnish: Remove the custard from the oven and let it cool in the water bath for about PT10M (10 minutes). Then remove the dish from the water and let it cool completely at room temperature. Optionally, sprinkle freshly grated nutmeg on top before serving.
10. Serve: Cut into individual portions and serve as a delightful and creamy baked snack.
