Decadent Red Wine Hot Chocolate Delight
Ingredients
- 2 cups whole milk
- 1/2 cup red wine (e.g., Merlot or Cabernet Sauvignon)
- 1/4 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
- 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
- 2 tablespoons sugar
- 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
- Pinch of salt
- Whipped cream (for topping)
Instructions
1. Prepare the Ingredients:
Gather all ingredients. It's essential to use quality chocolate and a wine that you enjoy drinking, as its flavor will be prominent.
2. Heat the Milk:
In a medium saucepan, pour 2 cups of whole milk. Place the saucepan on the stove over medium heat and slowly bring the milk to a gentle simmer. Stir occasionally to ensure it doesn't scorch. This should take approximately 5 minutes. (PT5M)
3. Melt the Chocolate:
Add 1/4 cup of semi-sweet chocolate chips, 2 tablespoons of unsweetened cocoa powder, and 2 tablespoons of sugar to the simmering milk. Whisk continuously until the chocolate is completely melted and the mixture is smooth.
4. Infuse with Wine:
Reduce the heat to low and slowly pour in 1/2 cup of red wine. Continue whisking to combine thoroughly. Maintain the low heat to let the flavors meld together while preventing any boiling, which could curdle the milk.
5. Flavor with Vanilla and Salt:
Stir in 1/4 teaspoon of vanilla extract and a pinch of salt to balance the flavors. Whisk gently for an additional 2 minutes. (PT2M)
6. Serve and Garnish:
Remove the saucepan from the heat and carefully pour the hot chocolate into serving mugs. Top each mug with a generous swirl of whipped cream.
