Decadent Strawberry Custard Delight
Ingredients
- For the Cake and Layers:
- 1 9-inch store-bought vanilla sponge cake
- 2 cups custard filling
- 2 cups whipped cream
- 2 cups fresh strawberries, hulled and halved
- 1 cup strawberry sauce
- For Garnish:
- 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup hazelnuts, finely chopped
- 1/2 cup almonds, finely chopped
Instructions
1. Prepare the Crust Topping:
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- In a small mixing bowl, combine 1/4 cup all-purpose flour, 1/2 cup chopped hazelnuts, and 1/2 cup chopped almonds. Mix well until combined.
- Spread the mixture onto a parchment-lined baking sheet in an even layer.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 10 minutes, or until the nuts are golden and fragrant. Remove from the oven and allow to cool completely.
2. Assemble the Cake:
- Begin by slicing the vanilla sponge cake horizontally into three equal layers.
- Place the bottom layer on a serving plate. Spread evenly with 1 cup of the custard filling, ensuring the entire layer is covered.
3. Add Strawberries:
- Arrange half of the halved strawberries over the custard layer, pressing them slightly into the filling.
4. Middle Layer:
- Place the second cake layer on top of the strawberries.
- Spread 1 cup of whipped cream over this layer, spreading it evenly to the edges.
5. Top Layer and Sauce:
- Top with the final cake layer.
- Generously pour over 1 cup of strawberry sauce, allowing it to drizzle down the sides.
- Arrange the remaining strawberries on top.
6. Finish with Whipped Cream:
- Spread the remaining cup of whipped cream over the top layer, creating a smooth finish.
7. Garnish:
- Sprinkle the cooled nut crust topping over the whipped cream for a delightful crunch and visual appeal.
8. Refrigerate:
- Chill the assembled cake in the refrigerator for at least 1 hour before serving. This helps the layers to set.
