Hearty Sausage and Herb Stuffing Bake
Ingredients
- 4 cups cornbread, cubed
- 6 slices white bread, cubed
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1 teaspoon dried sage
- 1 teaspoon dried parsley
- 1 tablespoon dehydrated celery
- 1 tablespoon dehydrated onion
- 1 tablespoon dehydrated mushrooms
- 1 cup fresh celery, diced
- 1 cup fresh onions, diced
- 1/2 cup pecans, chopped
- 1 cup apples, peeled and diced
- 1 pound sausage, casing removed and crumbled
- 4 tablespoons butter, unsalted
- 2 cups chicken broth
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
2. Prepare Bread Cubes: Spread the cubed cornbread and white bread on a baking sheet. Bake in the preheated oven for about 10 minutes until lightly toasted. Remove from oven and allow to cool.
3. Cook Sausage: In a large skillet over medium-high heat, cook the crumbled sausage until it's browned and cooked through, about 8 minutes. Transfer the cooked sausage to a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess fat.
4. Sauté Vegetables: Using the same skillet, melt 2 tablespoons of butter over medium heat. Add the fresh celery and onions, and sauté for about 5 minutes until they become soft.
5. Combine Ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, combine the toasted bread cubes, cooked sausage, sautéed vegetables, chopped pecans, diced apples, dehydrated celery, onions, and mushrooms.
6. Season and Mix: Add the oregano, sage, parsley, salt, and pepper to the mixture. Mix thoroughly until all ingredients are evenly distributed.
7. Moistening: Stir in the chicken broth gradually, ensuring the bread is moist but not soggy. Adjust the amount according to your preference.
8. Transfer to Baking Dish: Grease a 9x13-inch baking dish with the remaining butter. Transfer the bread mixture to the dish, spreading it evenly.
9. Bake: Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 30 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15 minutes or until the top is golden and crispy.
10. Serve: Allow the stuffing to rest for a few minutes before serving. Enjoy as a delightful, savory part of your dinner.
