Heavenly Vanilla Custard Delight
Ingredients
- 2 cups evaporated milk
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 4 large egg yolks
- 1/4 cup cornstarch
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 2 tablespoons butter or margarine
Instructions
Step 1: In a medium saucepan, combine the evaporated milk and salt. Place over medium heat on the stove, stirring occasionally, until small bubbles form around the edges. Do not let it come to a full boil.
Step 2: While the milk is heating, whisk together the egg yolks, cornstarch, and sugar in a large bowl until smooth and well-combined.
Step 3: Gradually add the hot milk mixture to the egg yolk mixture, whisking constantly to temper the eggs and prevent curdling.
Step 4: Pour the combined mixture back into the saucepan and return to the stove. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until the mixture thickens and coats the back of a spoon, approximately 5–7 minutes.
Step 5: Remove the saucepan from heat. Stir in the vanilla extract and butter until the butter is completely melted and the mixture is silky and smooth.
Step 6: Transfer the custard to individual serving dishes or a large bowl. Cover the surface with plastic wrap to prevent a skin from forming. Allow to cool slightly, then refrigerate for at least 2 hours before serving.
