Irresistible Stove-Top Vanilla Custard Delight
Ingredients
- 2 cups cream
- 1 cup whole milk
- 3/4 cup sugar
- 1 tablespoon pure vanilla extract
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
Instructions
1. Prepare the Stove
Begin by setting up a double boiler. If you don’t have one, use a heatproof bowl over a saucepan with simmering water. Ensure that the water doesn't touch the bottom of the bowl.
2. Combine Cream and Milk
Pour the cream and whole milk into the heatproof bowl. Heat gently over medium heat until the mixture is warm, but not boiling—approximately 6–8 minutes. Stir occasionally to prevent a skin from forming.
3. Incorporate Sugar
Add the sugar to the warm cream and milk. Stir continuously until the sugar dissolves completely. This should take about 3–4 minutes.
4. Flavor with Vanilla and Salt
Add the vanilla extract and salt into the mixture. Stir well to combine. The fragrance will become more pronounced as the custard thickens.
5. Thicken the Custard
Continue cooking the mixture, stirring occasionally, until it thickens slightly and coats the back of a spoon. This process will take approximately 15–20 minutes. Avoid letting it boil to prevent curdling.
6. Cool and Serve
Remove the custard from the heat. Let it cool slightly, about 10 minutes, before transferring it to serving dishes.
7. Chill
For a firmer texture, refrigerate the custard for at least 2 hours before serving.
