Oven-Baked Sausage & Cheese Buttermilk Biscuits
Ingredients
- 1 lb breakfast pork sausage
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 1 tablespoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 cup butter, cold and cubed
- 1 cup shredded Colby Jack cheese
- 1 cup buttermilk
Instructions
1. Preheat and Prepare:
Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper for easy cleanup.
2. Cook the Sausage:
In a skillet over medium heat, cook the breakfast pork sausage until it is browned and fully cooked, breaking it up with a spatula. Once cooked, transfer to a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess fat.
3. Dry Ingredients Mix:
In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt until well combined.
4. Incorporate the Butter:
Add the cubes of cold butter to the flour mixture. Using a pastry cutter or your fingers, work the butter into the flour until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
5. Add Cheese and Sausage:
Mix the shredded Colby Jack cheese and cooked sausage into the dry ingredients until evenly distributed.
6. Add Buttermilk:
Pour in the buttermilk and gently stir the mixture until just combined. Be careful not to overmix as this could toughen the biscuits.
7. Form Biscuits:
Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and gently pat it into a rectangle about 1-inch thick. Using a biscuit cutter, cut out rounds and place them on the prepared baking sheet. Gather scraps and repeat until all dough is used.
8. Bake:
Place the baking sheet in the preheated oven and bake the biscuits for 12-15 minutes or until the tops are golden brown and biscuits are cooked through.
9. Serve:
Remove the biscuits from the oven and let them cool slightly on a wire rack. Serve warm for best flavor, with optional butter or fruit preserves.
