Savory Pan-Fried Swedish Meatballs in Creamy Sauce
Ingredients
- For the Meatballs:
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1 pound ground pork
- 1 cup bread crumbs
- 1 large egg
- 1/2 cup milk
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/4 teaspoon allspice
- 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
- 1/8 teaspoon ground clove
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
- For the Creamy Sauce:
- 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 4 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 2 cups beef stock
- 1/2 cup heavy cream
- 1 tablespoon soy sauce
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Garnish:
- Fresh parsley, chopped
Instructions
1. Prepare the Meatball Mixture:
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, ground pork, bread crumbs, egg, and milk. Use your hands to mix until thoroughly combined.
- Season the mixture with salt, black pepper, allspice, nutmeg, and clove. Mix again to ensure even distribution of spices.
2. Shape the Meatballs:
- Form the mixture into small meatballs, about 1-inch in diameter. Place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
3. Pan-Fry the Meatballs:
- In a large skillet, melt 2 tablespoons of butter over medium heat.
- Add the meatballs in batches, being careful not to overcrowd the pan. Fry until they are browned on all sides and cooked through, about 10-12 minutes per batch.
- Transfer the meatballs to a plate lined with paper towels to drain excess fat. Set aside.
4. Prepare the Creamy Sauce:
- In the same skillet, melt 4 tablespoons of butter over medium heat.
- Stir in the flour and cook, stirring constantly, until the mixture turns a golden brown, creating a roux (about 2-3 minutes).
- Gradually add the beef stock, whisking continuously to prevent lumps. Bring the mixture to a simmer.
- Reduce the heat to low and stir in the cream and soy sauce. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
- Simmer until the sauce thickens, about 5 minutes.
5. Combine and Serve:
- Add the cooked meatballs back into the skillet with the sauce. Stir gently to coat the meatballs with the creamy sauce.
- Cook for an additional 5 minutes to allow the flavors to meld.
6. Garnish and Enjoy:
- Transfer the meatballs and sauce to a serving platter. Garnish with freshly chopped parsley.
- Serve hot, ideally with mashed potatoes or noodles for a complete dinner experience.
