Savory Slow-Cooked Ham with a Root Beer Glaze
Ingredients
- 1 fully cooked ham, approximately 3 pounds
- 1 cup packed brown sugar
- 1 cup root beer
- 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar
- 2 tablespoons Dijon mustard
- 2 tablespoons maple syrup
- 1 tablespoon honey
Instructions
1. Preparation:
Place the ham in the crock pot with the flat side facing down. Score the surface of the ham in a diamond pattern, cutting about 1/4 inch deep, which allows the glaze to penetrate the meat.
2. Prepare the Glaze:
In a medium-sized mixing bowl, combine the brown sugar, root beer, apple cider vinegar, Dijon mustard, maple syrup, and honey. Stir until the mixture is smooth and the sugar is fully dissolved.
3. Glaze the Ham:
Pour the prepared glaze evenly over the ham, ensuring it is well-coated. Use a brush to spread the glaze into the scored sections for maximum flavor infusion.
4. Cook the Ham:
Set the crock pot to the low setting. Cover and cook the ham for approximately 4 hours. Baste the ham with the glaze every hour to build up plenty of sticky caramelized flavor.
5. Final Basting and Resting:
Once cooked, switch off the crock pot and let the ham sit in the remaining glaze for about 10 minutes for added flavor infusion. Carefully remove the ham from the crock pot onto a carving board.
6. Serving:
Slice the ham and drizzle a little of the crock pot glaze over each serving for an extra burst of sweetness. Serve hot for the best taste experience.
