Stove-Top Cranberry Orange Compote
Ingredients
- 2 cups fresh cranberries
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1 tablespoon orange zest
- 1/2 cup water
Instructions
1. Prepare Ingredients: Rinse the fresh cranberries thoroughly under cold water. Measure out 1 cup of granulated sugar and zest the oranges to get about 1 tablespoon of zest.
2. Start the Compote: In a medium-sized saucepan, add the fresh cranberries, granulated sugar, orange zest, and 1/2 cup of water. Stir the ingredients together until the sugar begins to dissolve into the water.
3. Cook on Stove: Place the saucepan over medium heat. Allow the mixture to come to a gentle boil, stirring occasionally to prevent the sugar from sticking to the bottom or the sides of the pan.
4. Simmer: Once boiling, reduce the heat to low and let it simmer. Continue cooking for about 15 minutes, or until the cranberries have burst and the mixture has thickened to a desirable compote consistency. Stir occasionally.
5. Finish & Cool: Remove the saucepan from the heat and let the compote cool. As it cools, it will thicken further. Taste and adjust sweetness or acidity with additional sugar or a splash of lemon juice, if desired.
6. Serve: Serve warm alongside your favorite dinner entree, such as roasted poultry or pork. Alternatively, refrigerate until cold and serve as a refreshing condiment or side dish.
