Stove-Top Homemade Corn Tortillas
Ingredients
- 2 cups Masa harina
- 1 1/2 cups Water
- 1 tablespoon Lime juice
- 1/4 teaspoon Salt
- Corn (for garnish or side dish, if desired)
Instructions
1. Prepare the Dough:
- In a large mixing bowl, combine 2 cups of masa harina with 1 1/2 cups of water and 1 tablespoon of lime juice.
- Add 1/4 teaspoon of salt.
- Mix thoroughly with your hands until a soft dough forms, ensuring no dry bits remain. The dough should be moist but not sticky.
2. Rest the Dough:
- Cover the dough with a damp cloth or plastic wrap.
- Let it rest for PT15M (15 minutes). This allows the masa harina to fully absorb the moisture.
3. Shape the Tortillas:
- After resting, divide the dough into 12 equal pieces, rolling each into a small ball.
- Use a tortilla press or flatten each ball between two pieces of plastic wrap with the bottom of a pan until it reaches about 1/8 inch thickness and a circular shape.
4. Cook the Tortillas:
- Preheat a non-stick skillet or cast-iron pan over medium-high heat on the stove.
- Place one tortilla in the pan and cook for approximately PT1M (1 minute).
- Flip the tortilla and cook for another PT1M (1 minute) on the other side, until light brown spots appear.
- Transfer to a clean cloth and cover to keep warm. Repeat with the remaining dough balls.
5. Optional – Prepare the Corn:
- If desired, grill or boil corn on the stove as a garnish or side dish while the tortillas are cooking.
