Sweet and Spicy Jalapeño Relish
Ingredients
- 1 lb fresh jalapeños, finely chopped
- 4 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 tsp cumin seeds
- 1 cup white distilled vinegar
- 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
- 1 tsp salt
- 1/2 tsp red pepper flakes
Instructions
1. Prepare Jalapeños and Garlic:
- Carefully chop the jalapeños into fine pieces, removing seeds for less heat if desired.
- Mince the garlic cloves finely.
2. Toast the Cumin Seeds:
- In a medium-sized saucepan, place the cumin seeds over medium heat.
- Stir occasionally and toast until aromatic, approximately 2-3 minutes.
3. Combine Ingredients:
- Add the chopped jalapeños, minced garlic, white distilled vinegar, granulated sugar, salt, and red pepper flakes to the saucepan with the toasted cumin seeds.
4. Cook the Mixture:
- Stir the mixture well and bring it to a boil over medium-high heat.
- Once boiling, reduce the heat to low and let it simmer uncovered. Stir occasionally for about 15-20 minutes or until the mixture thickens slightly.
5. Adjust for Consistency:
- If you prefer a thicker relish, continue to simmer for an additional 5-10 minutes until the desired thickness is reached.
6. Cool and Store:
- Once cooked, remove the saucepan from heat.
- Allow the relish to cool completely at room temperature before transferring it to a clean jar with a tight lid.
7. Refrigerate:
- Store in the refrigerator for at least 24 hours before serving. This resting time allows the flavors to meld beautifully.
