Sweet and Tangy Oven-Baked Granny Smith Apple Crisp
Ingredients
- 4 large Granny Smith apples, peeled, cored, and thinly sliced
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 cup rolled oats
- 3/4 cup packed brown sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, chilled and cut into cubes
- 1/2 cup chopped pecans (optional)
Instructions
1. Preheat the Oven:
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
2. Prepare the Apples:
In a large mixing bowl, combine the sliced Granny Smith apples with lemon juice, granulated sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Toss the apples to ensure they are evenly coated. Set aside to allow the flavors to meld for approximately 10 minutes.
3. Make the Crisp Topping:
In another bowl, combine the flour, rolled oats, brown sugar, and salt. Add the chilled butter cubes and use a pastry cutter or your fingers to mix until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Stir in the chopped pecans if using.
4. Assemble the Dessert:
Spread the apple mixture evenly in a 9x13-inch baking dish. Sprinkle the crisp topping over the apples, making sure to cover them completely.
5. Bake the Crisp:
Place the assembled dish in the preheated oven and bake for 45 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apples are tender when pierced with a fork.
6. Cool and Serve:
Remove the apple crisp from the oven and allow it to cool for at least 10 minutes before serving. Serve warm or at room temperature, optionally with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream.
