Ultimate Charcoal-Grilled Hot Dogs
Ingredients
- 8 all-beef hot dogs
- 8 hot dog buns
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 cup diced onions
- 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
- 1/2 cup yellow mustard
- 1/2 cup ketchup
- 1/4 cup sweet pickle relish
- 1/4 cup bacon bits
- 1 tablespoon chopped fresh chives (optional)
Instructions
1. Prepare the Charcoal Grill:
- Light the charcoal grill and allow it to heat until the coals are white-hot and ashy, approximately PT30M (30 minutes).
- Arrange the hot coals in an even layer for optimal grilling.
2. Prepare the Onions:
- While the grill is heating, heat olive oil in a small pan over medium heat.
- Add diced onions and sauté until they are translucent and slightly caramelized, about PT10M (10 minutes).
- Remove from heat and set aside.
3. Grill the Hot Dogs:
- Place the hot dogs on the grill perpendicular to the grates to create nice grill marks.
- Grill them for approximately PT5M (5 minutes), turning occasionally, until they are evenly charred and heated through.
4. Toast the Buns:
- During the last minute of grilling the hot dogs, place the buns on the grill cut-side down.
- Toast them for PT1M (1 minute) until they are lightly browned and crisp.
5. Assemble the Hot Dogs:
- Place each grilled hot dog into a toasted bun.
- Top each with a mix of caramelized onions, a sprinkle of cheddar cheese, and a dash of bacon bits.
- Drizzle mustard and ketchup over the top.
- Add sweet pickle relish and a sprinkle of chopped chives for garnish, if desired.
