Ultimate Pan-Fried Ham and Gruyère Sourdough Sandwich
Ingredients
- 8 slices of sourdough bread
- 2 tablespoons whole-grain Dijon mustard
- 8 ounces cured ham, thinly sliced
- 8 ounces aged Gruyère cheese, sliced
- 2 tablespoons mayonnaise
- 4 tablespoons salted butter, softened
Instructions
1. Prepare the Bread
Slightly butter one side of each slice of sourdough bread (approximately 1/2 tablespoon per slice). Flip them over to the unbuttered side.
2. Dijon Mustard Spread
Evenly spread the whole-grain Dijon mustard on four of the unbuttered sides of the bread. This will help add a tangy depth to your sandwich.
3. Layer the Sandwich
Place an equal amount of thinly sliced cured ham (about 2 ounces) onto each of the Dijon spread sides. Top the ham with slices of aged Gruyère cheese (also about 2 ounces each).
4. Finish Assembling
Spread a thin layer of mayonnaise on the remaining four slices of bread (unbuttered side) and place them mayonnaise side down over the Gruyère cheese. This will create a delicious crust when pan-fried.
5. Pan Fry the Sandwiches
Preheat a non-stick skillet or grill pan over medium heat. Carefully place each sandwich in the skillet, buttered side down. Cook for 3-4 minutes on each side, pressing down lightly with a spatula for even browning, or until the cheese melts and the bread is golden-brown.
6. Serve Warm
Once the sandwiches are evenly cooked, remove them from the skillet and let them rest for a few minutes on a cutting board. Slice each sandwich diagonally and serve warm.
