Ultimate Stove-Top Italian Sausage Lasagna
Ingredients
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 pound Italian sausage, casings removed
- 9 lasagna noodles
- 4 cups marinara or arrabbiata sauce
- 1 cup water
- 1 ½ cups whole milk ricotta cheese
- 2 cups shredded whole milk mozzarella cheese
- ½ cup fresh basil leaves, chiffonade
Instructions
1. Brown the Sausage:
- Heat olive oil in a large stovetop pan over medium heat.
- Add the Italian sausage, breaking it into pieces with a spatula.
- Cook until browned and cooked through, about 7–10 minutes. Remove from the pan and set aside.
2. Prepare the Sauce:
- In the same pan, add the marinara or arrabbiata sauce and water.
- Stir well, scraping any browned bits from the bottom of the pan to enhance flavor.
3. Cook the Lasagna Noodles:
- Nestle the lasagna noodles into the sauce, ensuring they are completely submerged.
- Cover the pan and let it simmer for about 10 minutes, stirring occasionally to ensure even cooking and prevent sticking.
4. Assemble the Lasagna:
- Once the noodles are al dente, reduce the heat to low.
- Dollop spoonfuls of ricotta cheese over the top of the noodles.
- Sprinkle cooked sausage evenly over the ricotta layer.
5. Melt the Cheese:
- Distribute shredded mozzarella cheese evenly on top of the sausage layer.
- Cover the pan and allow the cheese to melt over low heat for about 5–7 minutes.
6. Finish and Garnish:
- Once the mozzarella is melted and bubbly, remove the pan from heat.
- Sprinkle fresh basil chiffonade over the top before serving.
