Warm Spiced Apple Rings on the Stove
Ingredients
- 2 large apples, preferably Honeycrisp or Granny Smith
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1 large egg
- 3/4 cup milk
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
- 1 tablespoon melted butter
- Vegetable oil, for frying
- Powdered sugar, for dusting
Instructions
1. Prepare the Apples:
- Peel the apples and core them carefully.
- Cut the apples into 1/4-inch thick rings and set them aside.
2. Prepare the Batter:
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, baking powder, salt, ground cinnamon, and ground nutmeg. Mix well.
- In a separate bowl, beat the egg and add the milk, vanilla extract, granulated sugar, and melted butter. Whisk until thoroughly combined.
- Gradually pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients while stirring, forming a smooth batter.
3. Heat the Oil:
- In a large skillet or frying pan, pour in enough vegetable oil to cover the base with about 1/2 inch of oil. Heat over medium heat until it reaches about 350°F (175°C).
4. Fry the Apple Rings:
- Dip each apple ring into the batter, ensuring it is fully coated.
- Carefully place the battered apple ring into the hot oil. Fry in batches to avoid overcrowding.
- Cook each side for 2-3 minutes, or until the batter is golden brown and crispy.
- Use a slotted spoon to remove the apple rings and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.
5. Serve:
- Dust the warm apple rings with powdered sugar.
- Serve immediately for optimal crispness.
